By Jalaja Ramanunni jalaja medianama. Britannica will convert titles owned by Katha into eBooks, and distribute them worldwide as part of its eBook program under the overall eLibrary initiative. Katha, is a year-old non-profit organization that has published over titles translated from 21 Indian languages for adults and children. Whereas, the volume-set Encyclopaedia Britannica has been moving beyond its traditional base to broader educational markets, such as classroom curriculum, e-learning and language instruction. This will be used as a curricular textbook for Classes 1 to 8, which Britannica will publish and market in India. Meanwhile, Britannica will provide digital knowledge and learning products, to Katha schools and learning centres for underprivileged children in India. Britannica will also offer the Literature Reader to schools abroad that follow Indian curriculum. One step forward, two steps back India is gradually warming up to the ebook revolution. It becomes more tricky when ebooks are used for education. Technological restrictions control what users can do with an ebook.

In many respects the work of authors changes very little as e-books become more popular. However, the details of their publishing contract will become more complex if they specify and fragment for instance, by territory or type their electronic publishing rights and choose to negotiate specific royalty structures for e-books.

As e-books become easier to publish, their abundance makes it harder for authors to stand out from the crowd and attract significant sales. This gives rise not only to increased social networking and blogging by authors but also to bold new licensing models intended to increase visibility.

Authors may distribute free digital copies or excerpts of books, publish them under open licenses that allow sharing and reuse such as Creative Commons licenses , and encourage the participation of fans in the writing process.
