This book is based on lectures presented at an annual short course entitled "Fiber Optic Communication Systems" at the University of California at Santa Barbara. The first chapter provides an overview of the ideal optical fiber waveguide, its information carrying capacity, degree of imperfection, and propagation of perturbed waveguide leading to intermodal coupling of power.

The next chapters describe the basic optical fiber cable configuration, the coupling components for optical fiber waveguides, and the electroluminescent sources for fiber systems. These topics are followed by discussions of the features and application of photodiodes, the development of a physical model for photodetection, circuit models for various detector types, and a statistical or noise model for optical receiver performance prediction.

The concluding chapters describe the theory and practice of receiver and transmitter design, as well as the design considerations for multiterminal networks. However, I would have preferred to download the Kindle edition for the usual reasons - portability and convenience. Just before committing, I noticed this note: The site rep told me that it was because the book was 'too big' for the Kindle. That's a little hard to imagine, but that's what I was told. So, Kindle owners beware. Just because it's a Kindle Edition doesn't mean you can read it on a Kindle. That must make sense in someone's universe Update - June - The Kindle edition of this book now works on the iPad Kindle app, and it is very good.

Essentially it provides you with the minimum motivation for modern optical fiber communication systems. It is also disjoint and relatively dry. My copy had Chapter 4 printed twice extra paper.

I'm not sure if there are better alternatives. Did anyone else notice the repetition within chapters? Great end-of-chapter references. Boring, like dried leather. I don't know if it happened in shipping or not, but the book was warped when it arrived.

However, everything is usable. The book does not have good examples on how to apply the concepts learned. The book is full with derivations of optics formulas, but lacks on showing their applications. Keiser provides an excellent introduction to the field for those enetering the optical communications arena. He progresses from the fundamental bases for electromagnetic propagation in dielectric waveguides to specific practices and principles related to implementation of optical fiber in communications systems.

Although the treatment of some commonplace modulation techniques in current practice is a bit light, this volume definitely helps to get one's feet wet in the discipline. Highly recommended for students, as well as those just entering the professional arena.

The book starting from the evolution of optical communication system, the basic theory of the wave guides including the optical fibers, introduces us the whole image of the fiber communication systems, which includs the light generation, propagation, revceiving, manipulation
