When eleven-year-old Gregor and his two-year-old sister are pulled into a strange underground world, they trigger an epic battle involving men, bats, rats, cockroaches, and spiders while on a quest foretold by ancient prophecy. Aimed at the teen reader I read the book to try to see what came before the Hunger Games. The author will likely improve as she moves the series along and for a first try in a rather dark underworld theme she keeps the book in balance but seems to feel a happy ending is necessary. Be sure to keep the Roaches as friends as they will outlive us all. Gregor the overland was a very good book because it had a lot of humour and some of it was very exciting and really cool action in the book. Being sucked down into the earth and making friends with giant roaches and bats while fighting giant rats and rescuing your long lost father all the while taking care of your baby sister what's not to love? I read this to get away from the heavier fare I've been reading; it seems like lately I've read a lot of stuff that was hitting me hard emotionally or taxing my brain cells, and I needed a little break. And this book was light enough to give the break, while still having enough action and a strong enough plot to keep my interest. The "questers" Gregor's word in this story reminded me of the Fellowship of the Ring in the Lord of the Rings - the group is made up of representatives from different races or species , and there is mistrust and some superiority between members of the different groups. Collins does a good job of showing the different "personalities" of the different types of animals, while giving each of the separate members of those groups some individuality as well. I hope, in the next few volumes, she gives us a better layout of the geography of the Underland itself. And yes, I do plan on reading more of this series!

When eleven-year-old Gregor follows his little sister through a grate in the laundry room of their New York apartment, he hurtles into the dark Underland beneath the city.

There, humans live uneasily beside giant spiders, bats, cockroaches, and rats—but the fragile peace is about to fall apart. Gregor wants no part of a conflict between these creepy creatures.

He just wants to find his way home. But when he discovers that a strange prophecy foretells a role for him in the Underland's uncertain future, he realizes it might be the only way to solve the biggest mystery of his life. Little does he know his quest will change him and the Underland forever.

It was almost "scary" in some parts but over all, I really liked this book, and I agree with lollypopies, that was my favorite part too!!! It adds a lot of suspense and drama. My favorite part is where Henry falls, and Gregor leaps and is caught by Ares. I love how mysterious it is.

I hope Suzanne collins makes more books like this one!!!!!
