What is the plot of The Iron Man? Melding science fiction with fairy tale, The Iron Man tells the story of a gigantic metal robot who appears out of nowhere, crashing onto the beach and shattering into many parts. He is discovered by Hogarth, a young boy. The Iron Man proceeds to devour farm machinery, until the farmers rise up against him. There is an act of betrayal as Hogarth agrees to lure the monster into a trap where he is buried underground — yet the Iron Man breaks free. Against demands from the farmers to bring in the army, Hogarth speaks out and suggests that the monster should be left to feed from the scrap metal yard. The Iron Man orders him to sing to Earth and its warmongering people. The spirit lulls them with his music into a state of lasting peace, ending the story with total harmony between man, nature and culture. Popularity and legacy The Iron Man has been enduringly popular with children. Who was George Adamson? Adamson was born in in New York, America, to British parents. Following the death of his parents between and , he was brought up in Lancashire with his aunts, and later acquired dual nationality. Adamson was an experienced illustrator, a cartoonist for Punch, and had served as an official war artist during World War Two.

The creature soon dubbed the "Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon" crashes heavily on Australia which it is large enough to cover the whole of and demands that humanity provide him with food. Terrified, humans send their armies to destroy the dragon, but it remains unharmed.

When the Iron Man hears of this global threat, he allows himself to be disassembled and transported to Australia where he challenges the creature to a contest of strength.

If the Iron Man can withstand the heat of burning petroleum for longer than the space being can withstand the heat of the Sun, the creature must obey the Iron Man's commands forevermore; if the Iron Man melts or is afraid of melting before the space being undergoes or fears pain in the Sun, the creature has permission to devour the whole Earth.

After playing the game two rounds, the dragon is so badly burned that he no longer appears physically frightening.

The Iron Man by contrast has only a deformed ear-lobe to show for his pains. The alien creature admits defeat. To keep him out of the way, the boy Hogarth takes charge and brings the Iron Man to a metal scrap-heap to feast.
