One person found this helpful. Like one of the other reviewers, I too spotted this book while walking through a bookstore and thumbing through various pages while the spouse was off shopping. This is a very big book! The book now gently rests on the night stand in our guest bedroom where it frequently sparks the morning conversation over coffee whenever friends and relatives are in town. First I was surprised at how big this book is!

A person could spend a lot of time with the book and still want to pick it up again. It isn't a book to sit down and read, but one to sit down and thumb through. I find it hard to put the book down once I start looking at it.

I don't think there is a significant invention or discovery that is not mentioned. The only drawback--if you consider it that--is that there is only a page or less about each invention. While the book is thorough in including all of the inventions, it has only minimal information about each one.

Still, it is a very fascinating book. I spotted this book while walking through Powell's Bookstore and thumbed through it a bit. Wrote the title down and ordered it when I got home. The book is an amazing compendium of inventions with detailed images, cutaway drawings, and background text.

It covers all of human history with an obvious bias towards the technological present. Though I've owned it now a couple of months, I have only scratched at the surface of the information in the book.

Reading articles here and there and then being led online to search for more detail. An excellent book for the internet era.

What I don't like is the small print. Younger eyes might not mind, but mine make me leave the text after a short time. The summaries are ok, and of course a great deal of information is there to peruse. I wound up downloading Bryan Bunch's History of Science and Technology, that is now available in Kindle, which on a pc allows one to enlarge the print, making it more useful, even though it's older.

Another print book, Defining Moments in Science, editor Mark Steer, , is more colorful, but with the same small print. It has plenty of good general information and historical photos.

I go this for my grandson and we really enjoy reading about inventions together. The book lists inventions in chronological order. Very interesting! A broad overview of the history of invention, starting with prehistoric times. The ability to innovate and evolve, and to leave something behind for future generations to learn from.
