With a quick press on the top latch the cover opens, exposing the two Western Digital hard drives inside underneath a metal retention bracket. The drives are quickly removed by unscrewing a thumb-screw holding on a retention plate, allowing you to pull on the handy plastic tab to lift the drive out. The drives are also labeled A and B to quickly identify which drive has failed and replace the correct one.

Since this storage device is passively cooled, using faster RPM drives may cause overheating and premature failure. Setup and Use WD includes a quick start guide with the drive that pretty much says plug it in and run the included CD.

If you don't have an optical drive, don't worry, once the My Book Live is connected to the network it's easily found by both Macs and PCs. From there you can access the software folder to install the included software, or not, it's not required once you know the IP address of the device. Having the software installed does make it easier to work with the drive though. It took us under a minute to run through the search of the network for the drive and installation the WD Quick View software.

From there it's time to configure the drive for backups, remote users and the like. To allow mobile users to log in, you can setup activation codes on a per-user basis to work with the WD 2go Mobile Apps. Or, use WD's mobile apps for easy access with your tablet or smartphone.

I returned the drive and downloadd a Seagate NAS. Do not download this drive if you plan to use it at a business due to the public folder being present as a permanent fixture. Mainly downloadd this because of the RAID configuation capability. The first one I received went down and never came back up while installing required firmware updates.

Turns out it was a known problem and I had no problem returning it.

Apparently there was a bad batch, but the second one I received accepted the firmware just fine. Rated 3 out of 5 by Peter C. I have setup and connected the device on my wireless server, and could only use the default setting. That blocked me from using of my own setting. I will have to find a friend who is an expert to help me to dig into much more complicated network setting.

I knew that it had to be the same software and setup as the existing My Book Live drives, but with the added ability to make it a RAID 1 drive. I have had WD drives crash in the past, so I will only trust my data to something that is redundant.

Set-up was easy, I went to the WD site after they put up product info and downloaded the full user manual. It was easy to install on my home network and to set up on a windows PC running Windows 7 home premium. Initial data transfer took quite some time as expected, 30 hours for GB. I really could not care less if that was efficient or not, it is what it is.

That was taking data off a USB 2. Had it running for 2 days, so too early to tell if has any issues.
