Transcript Robyn Williams: And so to the best book of the year so far on science, on life and on everything, The Demon in the Machine. Take this back to the s. And by the s he was definitely a legend in his own lifetime. Like many scientists from central Europe, they fled the Nazis, and a lot of them joined the Allied war effort. He was a native of Austria, he went first to the UK, accompanied by both wife and mistress. I'm not sure about the cat. He lived for a while in Oxford and then went on to Dublin. Robyn Williams: Well, you mentioned a cat just now, and the cat in the box, which is opened or closed, is quite famous. Paul Davies: Of course the cat is really a metaphor for macroscopic system. The weird thing about quantum physics is that down at the level of atoms and molecules, things behave in a funny sort of way. Particles can sort of be in two places at once and sometimes behave like waves and it's all crazy stuff. But in everyday life of tables and chairs and radio studios, everything seems sort of quite normal and rational. And the question is where on that long journey from atom up to, say, Robyn Williams, where does that weird world of quantum physics transform into the everyday world of tables and chairs.

When he began writing, Jeffers had no idea his work would be published. Writing and illustration has had an influence on the type of paintings he makes, and ideas from one world frequently bleed into another. His first solo show, for example, was inspired by quantum mechanics and the opposing forces of emotion and logic. Jeffers used the same visual stamp for his story of The Incredible Book Eating Boy, published the same year, in which a young boy literally devours a library of volumes in a quest for knowledge.

I was interested in doing a concept book; I thought I would probably do an alphabet book at some stage, and this became a way of using the alphabet as a framing device for the stories.

Sweetness and humour Jeffers says there are also differences in his approach when he is working in different media.

I think gallery owners, curators and artists all know that you often need another job to support yourself if you want to make art. And it is easier for good work to be seen for what it is too. Some of the biggest names in contemporary art in New York are tattooists, graffiti artists. The idea of the artist has changed. Two such projects have just been launched.
