Overview The book is divided into three sections, with the first section providing a thorough introduction to the structure, function and pathophysiology of the nervous system, as well as concise explanations of motor control, motor learning and motor development. The second section of the book is dedicated to paediatric issues, with an extremely practical chapter on Positioning and Handling to Foster Motor Functions, which includes a large number of illustrations and photographs to demonstrate appropriate positions, use of aids and supports and treatment techniques. There are also chapters on cerebral palsy, myelomeningocele and a range of genetic disorders, which are clearly and concisely described. The introductory chapter to this section discusses how to establish realistic goals, how to develop effective interventions and also how to teach management strategies to parents and carers. The third section covers adult neurology, and consists of one chapter devoted to PNF as a treatment technique, complete with a series of diagrams and photographs demonstrating the different PNF patterns. At the beginning of each chapter there is a box with a list of learning objectives. At the end of each chapter there are review questions which relate to the objectives, and the condition-specific chapters also include case studies. There is a long reference list at the end of each chapter. Also included is a comprehensive online resource linked to the book, which contains a collection of illustrated interventions and video clips, interactive case studies and study guide questions. Strengths Provides a thorough grounding in neuroanatomy and pathophysiology. Excellent summaries of neurological conditions encountered in both adults and children. Good structure within the chapters, with clear summaries, learning objectives and review questions.

The introductory chapter of this section provides a general philosophy for evaluation, for establishing realistic goals, and for developing effective interventions from the clinic to home regardless of diagnosis. Written instructions on interventions for positioning, handling, and transitional movements are accompanied by photographs and diagrammed progressions.

The reader is instructed on each intervention and on how to teach management to parents. The chapter concludes with a discussion about using adaptive equipment to achieve specific goals and about the functional meaning of daily activities.

The remaining 3 chapters of this section are diagnosis-specific and focus on cerebral palsy, myelomeningocele, and genetic disorders.

Each chapter includes a clinical neurology perspective and information regarding medical and surgical management. The principles discussed in this section's introductory chapter are applied to examples of treatment interventions for each stage.

Section 3 is devoted to the management of adult neurologic dysfunction. The first chapter in this section is a comprehensive explanation of the exercise philosophy and techniques of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation PNF. The reader is taught all exercise patterns, the techniques related to the stages of motor control, and the role of developmental sequence with both supine and prone progressions.

The diagnosis-specific chapters on cerebrovascular accident CVA , traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury SCI , and other neurologic disorders are organized similarly to those on pediatrics.
