The Suicide Shop is an altogether different book by an altogether different author. Gallic Books seems to delight in the slightly off-kilter. A walk down the shadowy isles of this morbid boutique reveals a dazzling variety of instruments with which weary shoppers can end their suffering. When pessimistic proprietor Mishima and his depressive wife give birth to a baby boy named Alan, they're overjoyed at the thought that he will be just as miserable as his somber siblings.

But Alan isn't like the others; bright-eyed and energetic, he's a ghastly ray of sunshine in their cherished world of grey skies. Not even the carcinogenic cigarettes enthusiastically bestowed to Alan by his concerned father are enough to snap the cheerful child out of his optimistic slump.

Realizing that the very future of their enduring family business may be threatened by the beaming boy, the Tuvache's soon resort to desperate measures in their efforts to keep the misery alive. Patrice Leconte. Bernard Alane as Mishima. That we can make a decision. To be happy. To be optimistic. To settle down to solving our problems rather than wringing our hands and turning a blind eye.

As I said, The Suicide Shop does not read like a novel in the conventional sense, but more like a continental film or play script: characters are more like symbols than characters and the slight stiltedness of the language adds a nice sense of unfamiliarity yet reminds continually this is a work in translation.

His father falls into a deep depression and takes to his bed. Alan and his classmates starts stopping some of his parent's customers from committing suicide.

Alan asks his friend's uncle to build a car with a music centre so loud and powerful that it shakes all the supplies in the shop off the shelves and onto the floor where they are ruined and broken.

Alan gets scolded by his mother, however a young customer who was there to download his suicide supplies has met and fallen in love with Alan's sister Marilyn and propose to her then and there. Marilyn agrees to marry him and is happy at last.

Angrily he demands explanations for the happiness of the family amid the wreckage of their shop and, when Alan admits being guilty, he chases after him with a sword in hand. On a roof of a skyscraper, Alan fakes suicide, throwing himself off the building. The family despairs and cry but Alan, with help from his schoolfriends, survives the jump, making his father laugh for the first time.
