Watson eventually learns that the lady he was talking to before is the wife of a man named Stapylton and suspects that he may have some doing with Sir Charles death.

They plan to set up a trap that would have Sir Henry outside and alone so when Stapylton attempts to kill him they could ambush him. Instead of Stapylton appearing though a huge hound attacks Sir Henry.

Sherlock shoots the creature down and reveals that the hound was coated phosphorous which gave it its immortal look. Mystery solved!
