Ten data are recognized as social cultural terms. The findings of social culture in this novel are divided into kinship pattern, addressing person, type of work. It could be by blood or marriage to another. The examples were Pamanda Guru and Ibunda Guru. The word Pamanda was derived from word paman which meant uncle.

Meanwhile, the word Ibunda was arisen from Ibu which meant mother. However, the suffix —da in ST culture told about respect and close relationship. Social cultural terms, which belonged to addressing person, in this research, were five data, such as tauke, Pak Cik, Bang, Ki Agus and Nyi Ayu. Those terms referred to address someone that is bond to ST culture. Tauke referred to Chinese people who own a shop, Pak Cik was connected to Melayu culture, bang was local addressing for older people.

Ki Agus and Nyi Ayu meant addressing person to royal family in Belitong. Three social cultural terms found in the novel were kuli kopra, penjual kaligrafi dan tionghoa kebun. Kuli kopra referred to people hired for manual labor in making dried coconut. Kaligrafi meant an art of writing, in ST culture usually refers to writing Arabic.

The stereotype of Chinese in ST culture was a rich trader. However, in this novel, some Chinese were not trader but farmer and usually they were not rich called tionghoa kebun. Organizations, customs, and ideas The political and social life of a country is reflected in its institutional terms, and religious terms.

The name of organization as cultural term found in this novel was Muhammadiyah, the second largest Islamic organization in Indonesia with more than 30 million members. Accurate, less accurate, and not accurate are the level of accuracy assessment. Similar with accuracy, acceptability and readability also is divided into, acceptable, less acceptable and not acceptable; readable, less readable and not readable.

Accuracy Accuracy means equivalent in meaning.

The translation process does not raise distortion in meaning. The cultural terms in ST are transferred accurately into TT. By 36 data, 18 data belonged to accurate translation; five data were recognized as less accurate translation, 13 data were not accurate translation.

Accurate Accurate translation concerns to the meaning of cultural terms accurately transferred the ST into TT; distortion does not occur at all meaning. For 36 data, 18 data were identified as accurate translation.

Below were the examples of accurate translation happened in the translation of Laskar Pelangi, ST TT 12 Bagi Lintang, kota kecamatan, For Lintang, the city district of our school tempat sekolah kami ini, adalah was like a metropolitan city, and to get metropolitan yang harus there he had to begin his bicycle journey ditempuh dengan sepeda sejak at subuh, early morning prayer, around subuh.

The translation of cultural term above was the example of an accurate translation. The information about subuh was transferred correctly in TT, without any meaning distortion. Less accurate Less accurate translation means some distortion or deletion of meaning happened, which disruptes the integrity of the message Nababan, The cultural term belacu was translated into cotton.

It fitted with less accurate translation. Actually in Indonesian Dictionary, belacu meant yellowish cotton. Some distortion happened in this case. The information about the color of cotton was not transferred into TT. It became an accurate translation if was transformed into yellowish cotton.

Not accurate Last, not accurate translation happens when meaning of cultural terms in the ST is not accurately transferred into the target language. In translating cultural terms in Laskar Pelangi novel, 13 data belonged to not accurate translation. Data 19 was the example of it.

Acceptability Acceptability refers to naturalness degree of a translation text according to the norms, rules, culture in TT Nababan, Acceptable translation of cultural terms was found seven data, less acceptable was realized 16 data, and 13 data belonged to not acceptable translation.

Acceptable Acceptable translation indicates the translation senses natural; The use of cultural term is familiar to the reader; the used terms are in accordance with the rules of TT. The analyzing of translation technique resulted seven data was acceptable translation. Data 22 was an example of acceptable translation. Tionghoa kebun translated into farmer.

The usage of farmer did not violate the TT rules. It meant the culture of TT was familiar with term farmer. Less acceptable If there are a slight problem in the use of cultural term, and arise few grammatical errors, then it belongs to less acceptable translation.

Sixteen data were identified as less acceptable translation. Data 24 was the example of less acceptable translation. Elementary The data above, cultural term bang was translated into bang.

It became less acceptable translation because the TT culture was not familiar with the term bang. Bang was addressing person in ST culture. It had similar meaning with term brother in TT. The word bang was unknown in TT culture.

Not acceptable Last, not acceptable means the cultural terms used are not commonly used and not familiar to the reader. The translation of 13 cultural term found in this research belonged to not acceptable translation. Sahara Aulia Fadillah binti K. Data 12 showed the translation of subuh as cultural term. It was translated into subuh also, without any changes. It made this example was readable for target reader.

Less readable If there are certain parts that should be read more than once to understand the translation, it means the translation product is less readable. Data 9 was less readable translation.

The cultural term Pak Cik was translated into Pak Cik. It was Melayu culture in addressing older people. Term Pak Cik was not known in TT culture. It made this case belonged to less readable, because the reader needed help in understanding this cultural term. Not readable Not readable is the cultural term which is difficult to understand by the reader.

Gelar K. Data 20 was the example of not readable translation. In this data, the translator removed the cultural term in ST. It was deleted in TT. Of course, it rose difficulty for the target reader to understand the text. By evaluating it, the researcher concludes, 1.

Finding equivalence is the main concern of translation theory. Translation process, as a realization of translation theory, always involves achieving equivalence. It leads a translator into the concept of translatability and untranslatability. Translatability means TT owns the equivalence of a word or phrase, clause or sentence in ST.

On the contrary, the concept of untranslatability raises dilemma for translator.

They try to obtain the equivalence that is impossible to be found in TT. It happens in cultural context. Word or phrase in ST may convey a totally unknown concept in TT. It can be related to the religious ceremony, food, ritual tradition, etc. That concept is often referred as specific concept of culture. For example, the concept of midodareni, which had close relationship to Javanese tradition, this concept is not known in English.

Besides, the second possibility cultural untranslatability might happen is once the concept in ST is not available in the TT. Translator must pay attention in untranslatability. Obstructions in untranslatability downgrade the target reader level of text understanding. It affects the quality of translation product, of course.

Protagonist is the character that is admired by the reader, popularly he is called as a hero because he always does ideal role and the rules and the values in society. The readers often identify themselves with this character, give sympathy and emphasis, and involve themselves in this character emotionally.

But of course, those Rizky Amalia: In other hand, novel not only needs characters, story and plot, but also setting. Setting usually directs to the definition of place, connection of time and social environment where the event happens. Setting gives the basic of story correctly and clear.

The setting is important to give realistic impression to the readers, created a certain situation at a glanced is really happened. So, the readers feel easier to create their imagination and participation to criticize the story. The use of setting which certain name should reflect the geographical condition of place.

Each place must have their characteristic, which differentiate with the others. The description of the place is important to give impression to the readers, because they will consider that the events are really happened in the place of the story. Setting of time is related to the problem of when the event happens in a story. The problem of when is usually connected with factual time, that has connection with Historical events.

The readers try to understand and enjoy the story based on the period. Social setting directs to the problem which are related to the behavior of social life in certain place and certain time in a novel. Social setting has connection with the system of social life that contains many problems in complex scope; it can be habits, costumes, religion, ideology, and the way of thinking.

Plot is important element of fiction or literary work; even most of the readers consider it as the important element among the other element of a novel, such as characterization, theme, point and point of view. Stanton stated that plot is the story that consists of events order, but each event is connected by causality, Nurgyantoro, Burhan. Meanwhile, Kenny stated that plot is the events shown in a story, which are arranged according to causality. The existence of the plot it self depends on three essential elements; event, conflict, and climax.

Event can be meant by a change of one situation to the other. Conflict is a dramatic thing, directed to competition between two balanced powers and show action — reaction. Event and conflict usually have a close relation. They can cause each other, actually conflict is event. There are certain events that can be happened as the result of conflict happened. According to Stanton, climax happens when the conflict had reached level of the highest intensity, and it can be avoided.

It means that climax must be happened because it is the meeting point between two or more situations, which are contrary and it decide how the problem will be solved, Nurgyantoro, Burhan. So, that the first step can be in the beginning of the story or text, and it also can be wherever the authors want. According to Tasrif, there are five steps in a plot; the introduction step is the opening of the story, giving earlier information, which is useful for the base of the base of the next step. Second, the step of generating circumstances begins when the conflict happened at the first time and it will develop or being developed its intensity.

Third, the step of rising action is conflict that happened in previous step will become more developing and become developed intensity. The external and internal conflicts, contras among the interest, problem, and characters which tend to climax, cannot be avoided anymore. Forth, step of climax when conflict and contras that happened to the characters reached culminating point.

The main characters as subject and object of conflict will realize the climax. A long fiction maybe has more than one climax. The last step is the denouement, it is the step which conflict and contras reached climax, which has being solved and made clear. Point of view is one of the elements in a novel which classified as literary device by Stanton. However it does not mean that the role of viewpoint will influence the story. It is the way or perception which is used by the author as a device to appear character, action and many kinds of event, which form the story in a fiction to the reader.

So, point of view truthfully is the strategy, or technique that is chosen by the author intentionally to tell his idea and the story. Point of view is the technique that is used by the author to find and tell the meaning of his artistic works to the readers. The authors expect that the reader can accept his technique. Point of view has psychological connection to the readers. The readers need clear perception about the viewpoint.

The readers understanding of a novel will be influence by a clear point of view. Point of view is not only considered as the way of dramatic, but also considered as serving thematic definition. He afraids of the crocodile, if he go to school there are many big crocodile across the street, so he must waits until the crocodile move from the street. He just lives in a little shelter, with his family. There only six things in that house that is: He just can learn after the mid night because his house is very noisy, difficult to find a quiet place. For him, learning is an entertainment that makes him forget all of his life difficulties.

He is the diamond in Muhammadiyah School, he is the inspiration for his friends. He can answer all the question, event, the difficult question that even Ms. Mus not attend to the class, he explains something new that can add their knowledge. He also teaches his friend with patience. He also interests and always found something new. He always gets the first rank in his school. He always appreciates his friends, never show off to his friend, he desires to be a mathematician. If it is become true, he will be the first Malay Mathematician, really a great desire.

He makes his school win a contest and brings some appreciation to his school. He also succees to makes his school famous, and because of him Muhammadiyah School be the first village school that win the contest, and he loose the student Rizky Amalia: But what a pity when in junior high school, his father dies, as the first son he must works to living his family.

So that he must leaves his school. His fiends and Ms. Mus were very sad; imagine a clever student like him, must leaves school because of financial problem. Class is not same without him, they lost one of their best friend.

Best friend that always spirit in his school, the student that make Muhammadiyah proud. They lost their light. They lost their genius friend. Ikal and his friend cry to dismiss him.

She asks all of the student to vote their choice. If her students do the good things she always gives Rizky Amalia: She also proud to have 10 good student, especially Lintang, she is very proud of him, she never meet a smart student like Lintang before.

Some times she gets confuse to answer some question from Lintang, but she enjoys it. He always gives the spirit to her students. She is a wise teacher. She loves her students and understands her student. He never gives up to keep the Muhammadiyah school exist. He also a handsome boy. He also the proud in his school just like Lintang. If Lintang smarts in mathematics, he smart in art. He has a nice voice and he can plays the music equipment nicely.

He sings with his heart. He is a film director, a singer, a choreographer, talented scenario writer, a talented story teller, an estimated poem reader and a painter. If there is no teacher in the class, Mahar usually reads a poem, or sings a song in front of the class. His friend assembly and listen to him, if he sings a song or reads a poem. He is so imaginative. He is a fan of illogically and all the things that related to the paranormal. He has an imaginative think. He knows all of the fairy tale, he also believe that aliens are real.

He always gets the high mark in art, the highest mark that only he can get that mark. He never lack of idea, his creativity is un expectable, unique, unusual and fresh. His head is full of crazy ideas. He directs and creates the little theatre in Muhammadiyah School, and with his advices he and his friend make a little group band. Sahara plays electro, Mahar plays guitar, Samson plays standing bass, Ikal and A-kiong play tambourine, Trapani plays drum and flute, at first, Harun wants to plays drum, but he does not knows the rhythm, so with the persuasions of Mahar, he be the carrier of the drum.

He is a talented arranger, he expert to choose songs and adapt it into their simple instrument. Mahar named his band Repubik Dangdut, the name that Rizky Amalia: A-kiong is his followers. He admires Mahar as if Mahar is his teacher.

Some times his friends think that she is a loudmouth.
